‘At sea, there are no boundaries’ Into the Deep is a 2022 thriller film about a young woman who meets a mysterious and attractive stranger who promises a romantic trip. What follows is deceit, mistrust, and violence…

Directed by Kate Cox from a story and screenplay written by David Beton (Confession; The Banishing; The Hatton Garden Job; I Am Soldier).

Produced by Leonora Darby, Sarah Gabriel, Marc Goldberg, James Harris and Mark Lane.

The British-American Tea Shop Productions-Capstone Studios-Signature Films co-production stars Ella-Rae Smith, Jessica Alexander, Matthew Daddario, Nikkita Chadha, Jack Morris, Andrew Steele, Michael Workeye and Natalia Christabelle.

Plot synopsis: Jess (Ella-Rae Smith) is swept off her feet by a mysterious stranger named Ben (Matthew Daddario), who takes her to his boat that’s docked nearby. Dangerously adrift miles from shore, their romance is interrupted when Lexie (Jessica Alexander) shows up, and soon the three get wasted and play lusty games.

When the party takes a sudden turn for the worse, it’s clear that either Ben or Lexie is a dangerous liar. In the explosive climax, Jess must decide which one to help… and which one to destroy.

First-time director kate Cox shared what drew her to the story in the following statement: “I was drawn to the female protagonists and their nuances of trust and mistrust. Lexie and Jess are not perfect, and Jess goes on a journey of transformation where she loses some of the naivete of youth. I feel the audience will relate to these character traits and experiences. The contained location, at sea, increases the stakes and emphasizes the duelling of power between the three characters, which creates palpable tension.”

Reviews: “Once Lexi enters Into the Deep, the film practically runs towards an underwhelming, predictable finale that one can feel coming from a mile away. Jess as the lead is boring and untextured; the setup of the movie goes on for so long, yet we never learn enough about Jess as a person to make her a character worth following.” 1.5 out of 5, Josh at the Movies

“Director Kate Cox gets some claustrophobic tension from the tight quarters of the boat and solid performances from the cast (which is something, considering how thinly and inconsistently written these characters are), but the whole of the story depends too much on Jess being overly naïve and then, for no real reason, overly paranoid about or protective of certain characters for it—or her for that matter—to be believable.” 1.5 out of 4, Mark Reviews Movies

“As a thriller, Into the Deep falls short. As a mystery, it is relatively solid, though it takes too long to actually get to the latter. Those looking for jaw-dropping plot twists might end up disappointed. There are some things that Into the Deep does well, but it is ultimately too slight to really commit to any of its interesting ideas.” 2 out of 5, Screen Rant
