BERLIN (AP) — Russia's Gazprom stopped the flow of natural gas through a major pipeline from Russia to Europe early Wednesday, a temporary move to it announced in advance.
The Russian state-controlled energy giant said earlier this month that it would the cut the flow of gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline until Saturday for what it says is a three-day pause for routine maintenance at a compressor station.

Formula One championship leader Max Verstappen made quick work of a safety car restart to win the Dutch Grand Prix in front of 100,000 adoring fans, and make it four straight wins for the first time in his F1 career. Verstappen’s 10th win matched his tally from last year. The Red Bull driver extended his championship lead over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to 109 points. With seven races left a second straight title looks increasingly likely. George Russell finished second for Mercedes ahead of Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton dropped to fourth. Verstappen appeared to be coasting to victory when a safety car came out on Lap 56 after the engine cut on Valtteri Bottas’ Alfa Romeo and threw the race wide open.

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson is on the campaign trail a week before the national election. She traveled by bus Sunday to communities near Stockholm seeking to win over voters concerned over gang violence and electricity bills that have risen painfully since Russia invaded Ukraine. The election on Sept. 11 comes amid a sense of rising insecurity with a spate of shootings in Sweden making crime a key campaign issue. Russia’s war against Ukraine led Sweden and Finland to take the historic step of applying to join NATO this year. That step has reassured many and is so uncontested it hasn't been an issue in the campaign before the election.
Wolverhampton says Austria striker Sasa Kalajdzic sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury on his debut and is set for a long spell out. Wolves say Kalajdzic felt pain in his knee at the end of the first half of the 1-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday and was substituted at halftime. The club says "unfortunately scans reveal an anterior cruciate injury and he will see a knee specialist tomorrow. We now need to support Sasa in his recovery.” The 25-year-old Kalajdzic was signed to add some much-needed depth and variety to Wolverhampton’s attack. The team has scored just three goals in six games, tied for the fewest in the league.
Backup sophomore quarterback Brady Meitz threw for 350 yards, including a school-record 98-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Lane, and Stetson fought off feisty NAIA Concordia (MI) 24-14 in a season opener for the Hatters. The visiting Cardinals scored on their opening drive, then graduate starter Alex Piccirilli went down with an injury late in the first quarter. Meitz finished 26-for-38 passing. Gavin Brooks threw for 240 yards for Concordia.

In Mexico, a long list of nonviolent crimes bring automatic pretrial detention, with no bail or house arrest allowed. The country's Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on that policy. Some justices argue pretrial detention should be used only in exceptional cases. Suspects accused of murder and other violent crimes seldom get released on bail anywhere in the world. But in Mexico, the list of charges that allow a suspect to be detained pending trial has grown to 16, including abuse of authority, corruption and electoral crime. Yet only about two of every 10 people accused of a crime in Mexico are ever found guilty.
Leicester plunged into more turmoil in the Premier League by losing 5-2 at Brighton to remain in last place and without a win after six matches. Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers was already under pressure before his team’s fifth loss of the season with its defending particularly poor at Amex Stadium. The visitors failed to capitalize on taking the lead inside the first minute through Kelechi Iheanacho, with an own-goal by Luke Thomas and Moisés Caicedo’s strike putting Brighton in the lead after 15 minutes. Patson Daka equalized in the 33rd but Brighton dominated the second half with Leandro Trossard and two goals by Alexis Mac Allister piling on the agony for Leicester.
An eastern Indiana police officer who was shot in the head during a traffic stop has been moved to hospice care after being taken off life support at a hospital. The Richmond Police Department says 28-year-old Officer Seara Burton was transferred to a hospice facility in the Richmond area on Saturday. She had been treated at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio, since being shot on Aug. 10. The department says in a Facebook post that “she will continue receiving excellent care and be surrounded by her family." Burton was taken off life support Thursday. A Richmond man is jailed on three attempted murder charges in the officer's shooting.
Brendan Fraser is having a moment at the Venice International Film Festival. The once ubiquitous movie star of “The Mummy” franchise and “George of the Jungle” had, in the last decade, had backed away from the spotlight. But Fraser is charting what could be a major comeback starting with his transformative role in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” which has its world premiere Sunday night at the festival. In the film, Fraser plays Charlie, a reclusive English teacher with a kind soul who weighs 600 pounds. It already has pundits predicting Oscar nominations, but Fraser said he is just “trying to stay in today."

The Premier League has asked the body in charge of referees in England to look into two decisions taken after video review on Saturday. West Ham and Newcastle were denied goals that were awarded by the on-field referee, following an intervention by VAR. West Ham manager David Moyes described as “scandalous” a VAR decision to disallow what would have been a 90th-minute equalizer by Maxwel Cornet against Chelsea because Jarrod Bowen was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the buildup. Chelsea won 2-1. At Newcastle, an own-goal by Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell was ruled out for what VAR judged to be a foul by Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock on goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. The game finished 0-0.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam has won his first toss in the Asia Cup and decided to field against archrival India in the Super 4 game on Sunday. India took round 1 against Pakistan when it recorded five-wicket victory in the group game at the same venue last Sunday. India was forced into team changes after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a knee injury he sustained during the last group game against Hong Kong. Fast bowler Avesh Khan also had to sit out due to illness as power-hitter Deepak Hooda and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi got their first game of the tournament.
Civil rights activists and some lawmakers are concerned that new redistricting maps in three Southern states will dilute the voices of Black people. In Alabama and Louisiana, Republican-dominated legislatures have approved maps with one majority-Black district, despite Black people accounting for nearly one-third of the population in each state. In Florida, legislators approved a map that dismantles at least one district where Black voters have a strong voice. Civil rights activists worry the maps could diminish minority representation on Capitol Hill. The issue is especially contentious this year, when Democrats are fighting to hang on to slim majorities in Congress.

President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan could lift crushing debt burdens from millions of borrowers. But in some states, the tax man may demand a cut of that relief. That’s because some states tax forgiven debt as income. And that means borrowers who are still paying down student loans could owe taxes on as much as $10,000 or even $20,000 that would count as income. In Mississippi, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas and North Carolina, forgiven student loans will be subject to state income taxes unless they change their laws to conform with the federal exemption. That's according to a tally by the Tax Foundation.
Canada forward Jonathan David has scored twice as Lille won 3-1 at 10-man Montpellier in the French league. The turning point came deep in added time of the first half when Montpellier striker Valere Germain received a straight red card for a reckless foul from behind on Adam Ounas. Cyrus Mistry, an Indian-born Irish businessman and former chairman of Indian conglomerate Tata Sons, has died in an accident after his car crashed in western India. He was 54. Police say the crash occurred on Sunday near Mumbai. Mistry served as Tata Sons chairman for five years until he was removed by the board in October 2016. He challenged the board’s decision but India’s top court upheld his dismissal. Politicians and business leaders reacted with shock to news of Mistry’s death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Mistry was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess. Mistry owned an 18.4% stake in Tata Sons through his company, Cyrus Investments Pvt. Ltd. In 2018, his net worth was approximately $10 billion.
Black business owners in Mississippi’s capital say the city’s broken water system poses dire costs for their bottom lines. They say the crisis threatens to hit them hardest. They fear the city's water woes will send more consumer dollars from Jackson and its crumbling infrastructure to the city’s outskirts. Some business owners report spending anywhere between $300-500 per day on ice and bottled water. The city’s population is now more than 80% Black, with about 25% of its residents living in poverty. Jackson's tax base has eroded over the past few decades as the population decreased after white flight to the suburbs. Jackson's water woes have left some of the city's 150,000 residents with little or no water flowing from taps.
